Which Will A New Skoda Rapid Be? – The First Information
In 2019 an all-new Skoda Rapid will be presented. Experts believe that after a change of generations, the model has every chance of capturing a large piece of the family car market. Today the first information about the novelty is already known.
According to the marketing strategy, the second-generation Rapid should be a rival to the Opel Astra, Ford Focus and even the Volkswagen Golf, which is very close to the premium segment. Therefore, the new Rapid will be rebuilt in such a way as to avoid cheap materials, but at the same time stay in an affordable price category.
The next Rapid will not have a liftback version. There will only be a hatchback, perhaps even with the prefix Spaceback in the title.
A more significant innovation will be the platform. Skoda received the right to use the MQB A0 platform, which will replace the obsolete PQ26.
Thus, the wheelbase of the new Rapid will be 2 645 mm, which is 25 mm longer than the current Golf. In other words, the new car will have a fairly spacious cabin for this class, plus improved materials for its finish and a good choice of engines.
The motor range of the next Rapid will include the latest VW Group petrol engines, among which a 1.0-liter three-cylinder unit from 85 to 110 hp, a new 1.5-liter 150-hp engine and a 1.6-liter diesel.
A fully-fledged hybrid powertrain is unlikely to be expected, but a mild hybrid version with a drive generator and a 48-volt electrical system is quite possible.
The Skoda management is confident the new Skoda Rapid can become a good alternative to compact crossovers. However, the Czechs intend to enter this segment. Presented recently in Geneva, the Vision X Concept (pictured above) is clearly proof of that.
The new Rapid will fill a vacuum between the Fabia and Octavia, and also give the chance to push the Octavia of a new generation a little higher in the automotive hierarchy.
